Mohamad Fawzi Mahomoodally

Fawzi holds a life sciences degree and is Harvard University Alumni with a deep rooted interest in biopharmaceutical and biomedical sciences.

Based on his outstanding performance, he was promoted on a fast track basis from lecturer to senior lecturer and then Associate Professor. Presently he is visiting professor in China and Vietnam. He served as Head of Department of Health Sciences (2016-2018), and Board Member of Association for African Medicinal Plant Standards. He was nominated as TWAS-ROSSA young Affiliate (2012-2016), member of the Global Young Academy (2013-2018), recipient of the Young Promising Scientist from Mauritius to attend the TWAS/BVA.NXT Biovision 2012 Egypt and the ASM Leadership grant to Boston, USA (2013). He was selected among the top 25 Young Scientists to attend ‘Food Future’- ICSU meeting in Italy and nominated as Young Ambassador, member of the Young Leader’ Circle and Country Ambassador to the American Society for Microbiology (2015-2017). He is recipient of >52 fellowships/travel grants/ and invited as plenary/keynote/invited speaker to present in international conferences.

Fawzi is the scientific editor/reviewer/book proposal and grant evaluator and PhD examiner of >100 peer-reviewed international scientific journals, books, and international grant reviewer (>15 - for MRC-UK, Poland, Germany, UNESCO, South Africa, and Netherlands). He has been nominated and chaired > 50 national/international committees: executive member of the National Pharmacovigilance Committee, Ministry of Health & Quality of Life (Mauritius); National Research Foresight Exercise (MRC-Mauritius), Ayurvedic Committee and a technical member for the innovators award IV by the National Productivity and Competitiveness Council. He was the chairperson of African Traditional Medicine committee (ARSO-MSB) from 2014-2015. Fawzi is an active researcher and the principal supervisor/mentor of > 150 undergraduate, 1 postdoctoral fellow, 1 Fulbright scholar, 7 MSc, 13 PhD (6 PhD completed and 7 ongoing PhD projects).

Fawzi is ranked as the top most prolific author from University of Mauritius, collaborating with more than 20 international teams and has authored > 377 scientific publications with cumulative impact factor for his publications over 415.

Fawzi works in the field of health sciences, with a deep-rooted interest in biomedical and biopharmaceutical sciences, ethnopharmacology and documenting/validating the use of complementary & alternative medicine and traditional knowledge pertaining to the use of natural products/nutraceuticals (medicinal herbs/spices/food plants/animal products/practices). He endeavours to develop therapeutic bio-products (supplements & nutraceuticals) in collaboration with private companies from local medicinal herbs/food plants to address global health, wellness, and food security issues.
